Undergraduate Mentoring

I have mentored 15 undergraduates in the Godwin Lab. All have worked on various projects in the lab and learned techniques such as in situ hybridization, qRT-PCR, immunohistochemistry, cryosectioning, gene cloning, RNA extraction, cDNA synthesis, and data analysis. Many have presented their work at scientific meetings and have gone on to graduate school, medical school, dental school, and other avenues.

Jeannie measuring kisspeptin receptor 2 (kissr2) expression.

_MG_7779 Brandon

Brandon worked on gonadotropin-releasing hormone 1 (GnRH1) expression.

Sidney

Sidney looked at expression of genes of the thyroid axis.

Sophie Austin

Sophie Austin joined the Godwin Lab as a Freshman in 2010 and was able to accompany us during fieldwork in the Florida Keys in 2012. Here, Sophie presents her work on FoxL2, gonadal aromatase, and DMRT1 gonadal expression via qRT-PCR during sex change in the bluehead wrasse. Sophie began medical school at East Carolina University in Fall 2014.

Ashley Teal

Ashley Teal joined the lab as a second-semester Junior and completed a Senior honors project. Here, Ashley presents her work on Tac3 mRNA expression in the bluehead wrasse brain.

Jana Ward

Jana Ward joined the lab as a second-semester Junior and continued working in the lab during her Senior year. Jana worked on testing a custom-made kisspeptin2 antibody.
